Less manual work, greater scalability, and faster completion of tasks such as monitoring, triage, and data processing. That enthusiasm is well-founded.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, I see that autonomy is often used as a label, not as a characteristic. Teams expect work to disappear, when in reality it is simply shifting. Tasks aren\u2019t being eliminated; instead, they\u2019re transforming into monitoring, correction, and exception handling.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not a failure of the technology. It is a design flaw. Autonomy without clear boundaries increases the cognitive load on the team and undermines the intended productivity benefit.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wanneer-is-ai-&#xE9;cht-agentic-\">When is AI truly agentic?  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every AI that automates tasks is an agent. Many solutions presented today as \u201cautonomous\u201d are, in fact, workflow automation with a language model attached. That\u2019s useful, but fundamentally something else.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, AI only becomes truly agentic when a system:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"werkt-vanuit-een--doel--niet-alleen-een-instructie-\">works toward a <strong>goal<\/strong>, not just following instructions  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"zelfstandig--beslissingen--neemt-binnen-vooraf-gedefinieerde-grenzen-\">makes <strong>decisions<\/strong> independently within predefined limits  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"-acties--uitvoert-over-meerdere-stappen-en-systemen-heen-\">performs <strong>actions<\/strong> across multiple steps and systems  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, it\u2019s not just your software architecture that changes, but also your team\u2019s role. Agentic AI isn\u2019t a senior colleague. It behaves more like an extremely fast junior: capable, but only effective within clear boundaries.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"waarom-autonomie-zonder-ontwerp-werk-verschuift-in-plaats-van-wegneemt-\">Why autonomy without design shifts work rather than eliminates it  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as agents are given more freedom, without clear boundaries, work inevitably shifts to other people\u2014not in terms of execution, but in terms of oversight.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teams spend more time on:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"het-herstellen-van-onverwachte-outputs-\">Recovering from unexpected outputs  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"het-afhandelen-van-uitzonderingen-\">handling exceptions  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"het-verklaren-van-beslissingen-die-de-agent-zelf-niet-kan-uitleggen-\">explaining decisions that the agent cannot explain himself  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autonomy may feel like progress, but in reality it adds complexity. Without careful design, agentic AI won\u2019t act as a catalyst\u2014it will just create more noise.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"autonome-ai-in-risicovolle-sectoren-\">Autonomous AI in High-Risk Sectors  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In industries such as insurance, accounting, law, and finance, a mistake is rarely harmless. A misinterpreted policy, an inaccurate summary of a legal document, or an erroneous journal entry can have direct financial or legal consequences.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes agentic AI fundamentally different here than in consumer products or internal tools. Autonomy means not only speed, but also <strong>responsibility at scale<\/strong>. A small design flaw does not occur just once, but repeatedly.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is precisely in these areas that \u201cit seems to work\u201d is not enough. An agent must not only be efficient, but also explainable, predictable, and verifiable.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autonomy does not mean that responsibility disappears. It shifts\u2014toward design, governance, and observability. This is especially true in regulated and knowledge-intensive sectors: if you cannot explain after the fact why an agent did something, it was designed to be too autonomous.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human-in-the-loop remains essential\u2014not to manually review every decision, but to understand, adjust, and correct behavior. Blind trust in AI is not a mature architectural choice.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"productiviteit-van-ai-agents-meet-je-niet-na-livegang-\">You don&#8217;t measure the productivity of AI agents after they go live  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important question, therefore, is not whether an agent can do something, but whether it <strong>adds net value<\/strong>. An agent that performs many tasks but constantly requires human supervision is rarely productive.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real productivity gains can only be achieved if the following is explicitly established in advance:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"welke--handelingen--moeten-verdwijnen-\">Which <strong>actions<\/strong> should be eliminated?  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"welke--doorlooptijden--aantoonbaar-korter-moeten-worden-\">which <strong>lead times<\/strong> must demonstrably be shortened  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"welke--fouten-en-uitzonderingen--acceptabel-zijn-\">which <strong>errors and exceptions<\/strong> are acceptable  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without that focus, you end up optimizing after the fact and attributing your disappointment to \u201cthe technology isn\u2019t mature yet.\u201d In reality, it was the experiment that wasn\u2019t up to par. This also requires different skills from teams: less execution, more design; less manual work, more interpretation. Because an agent\u2019s autonomy still requires human oversight.       <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"waarom-succesvolle-ai-agents-bewust-&#x2018;saai&#x2019;-zijn-ontworpen-\">Why Successful AI Agents Are Deliberately Designed to Be \u201cBoring\u201d  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best agentic AI solutions I&#8217;ve seen have little in common with maximum autonomy. On the contrary, they are tightly designed:   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"&#xE9;&#xE9;n-helder-doel-\">one clear goal  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"een-beperkte-expliciete-scope-\">a limited, explicit scope  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"duidelijke-momenten-waarop-een-mens-ingrijpt-\">clear instances when a person intervenes  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where agents fail, you almost always see the same pattern: deployed too broadly, given too much freedom, and lacking explicit checkpoints and controls. That may feel innovative, but it\u2019s rarely scalable. A boring design isn\u2019t a limitation. In industries where mistakes have direct consequences for customers, compliance, or financial outcomes, it\u2019s a prerequisite for trust.     <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"agentic-ai-werkt-alleen-als-mens-en-systeem-samenwerken-\">Agentic AI only works when humans and systems work together  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agentic AI can be a highly productive colleague. But only if you treat it as part of your team structure, not as a magic solution. The real benefit lies not in making it as autonomous as possible, but in thoughtful collaboration between humans and the system. AI handles tasks that make sense to automate. People guide, evaluate, and correct where necessary.      <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That requires more design discipline from R&amp;D teams. And that, in my view, is precisely where the role of a CTO lies today.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"veelgestelde-vragen\">Frequently Asked Questions<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"><div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1768985176950\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\"><strong>1. What is the difference between agentic AI and ordinary automation?<\/strong><\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Automation follows fixed rules and scripts. Agentic AI operates based on goals, makes independent decisions within defined parameters, and carries out actions across multiple steps and systems.
